Frequently Asked Questions
Allergies
All ingredients used in our products are clearly listed on our website, labels, and Technical Data Sheets. Product labels provide comprehensive ingredient information to help you identify suitable options.
Yes. AURO products No. 321, 331, 301, 505, 506, 307, 308, 309 and 303 have been tested and certified by the Institute for Environment and Health (IUG) as safe for allergy sufferers and contain no allergens.
Wall paints no longer contain volatile oils. Full product declarations are available on our website so you can review all ingredients and choose the right product.
General
AURO products are manufactured in our own factory with the highest ecological consistency. Raw materials come from plant or mineral sources, with no petrochemical solvents used. All ingredients are disclosed on the label with full transparency (Volldeklaration).
Our products perform equivalently to synthetic paints in terms of durability and application. Certifications from independent institutes confirm technical quality. Stiftung Warentest named AURO Aqua Wood Stain No. 160 a “test winner” (05/2006).
Per square metre of painted surface, AURO paints are no more expensive than conventional products and are sometimes cheaper. High-quality natural raw materials and smaller production volumes carry associated costs, but these are offset in practical application.
Many shades are achievable; custom colour mixing is offered as a paid service. However, colours requiring synthetic pigments (such as signal yellow or bright red) are not produced, as they are incompatible with AURO’s philosophy of using only mineral and plant-based pigments.
Natural paints are not completely odourless. Volatile oils added as solvents or protective agents produce a distinctive scent. For those with scent sensitivity, the solvent-free AURO Aqua product range is recommended.
The vast majority of AURO products are plant and mineral-based. However, some contain animal-derived ingredients such as beeswax, casein, lactic acid, shellac and cochineal. Products marked with a “vegan” symbol on our website are clearly identified.
AURO Aqua paints contain natural resin and oil-based binders (not synthetic), with no solvents, preservatives or glycol. AURO is the only manufacturer producing solvent-free, water-thinnable products without synthetic elements or preservatives.
“Environmentally hazardous” means toxic to aquatic organisms and indicates the product must not enter waterways. These symbols are statutory warning notices and do not affect the product’s overall ecological credentials.
Purchasing & Technical Advice

Corporate Social Responsibility
Sustainable action and environmental protection have been AURO’s unchanging corporate culture for over 40 years. This commitment is documented in environmental statements and remains the primary criterion in every new product development.
AURO requires all suppliers to sign a declaration confirming compliance with ILO (International Labour Organization) standards, including prohibition of child labour, fair wages, proper working conditions and freedom of association.
AURO uses renewable raw materials, has operated exclusively on solar-supported renewable energy since 2012, and ships via DPD with climate-neutral delivery. Plant-based raw materials are inherently carbon-neutral throughout the production and decomposition cycle.
Product Storage
Water-thinnable products can freeze, which typically breaks the emulsion and renders the product unusable. Store products in cool, dry, frost-free conditions.
When stored in cool, dry, frost-free conditions, shelf life is virtually unlimited. Our experience shows that most customers successfully use products even after extended storage periods.
Raw Materials
Full product declarations are available on product pages, labels and Technical Data Sheets. Our Raw Materials Guide provides detailed information on the origin and function of every ingredient.
Titanium dioxide is a non-toxic natural white pigment produced for over 100 years. Derived from natural minerals such as rutite, it offers excellent coverage and technical properties. In AURO products it is also used catalytically to neutralise indoor air pollutants.
Currently there is no non-toxic, safe alternative matching titanium dioxide’s functionality, coverage and light resistance. For those who prefer to avoid it, Chalk Paint No. 326, made from pure lime (calcium hydroxide), is available as an alternative.
Thiazoles are organic compounds used as preservatives in cleaning products, paints and cosmetics. AURO produces 92% of its range without preservatives; however, a few products require them under EU biocide regulations. Thiazoles are the only synthetic raw material AURO uses, at minimal concentrations (0.01–0.02%).
Safety
Without adequate air, drying oils in used rags can spontaneously ignite. After use, lay rags flat to air-dry; fully dried rags can be disposed of as household waste.
All AURO paints are produced without cobalt and comply with EU EN 71-3 toy safety standards. Our products meet both EN 71-3 and DIN 53160 standards (perspiration and saliva resistance).
No. AURO avoids nanotechnology due to safety concerns.
No. Fungicides permitted under EU legislation for blue stain prevention do not meet AURO’s raw material requirements and are therefore not used.
Generally near-neutral pH. Products with a legally required elevated pH (such as those containing wood ash or lime) are clearly labelled on the packaging and Technical Data Sheets.
Products containing registered biocides: Mould Eliminator No. 412, Mould Stop No. 413 and Mould Prevention Paint No. 327. All three are registered with Germany’s BAuA for EU use.
Mould Prevention
If mould spots have been identified and removed, the eliminator alone is sufficient. For extra protection, Mould Stop spray provides additional security. Without addressing the underlying cause, however, no product offers a permanent solution — consulting a specialist is recommended.
All dried AURO products can be disposed of as household waste. Leave the bottle open until volatile components have evaporated (the vapours are non-toxic); completely empty bottles are recyclable.
Application: Catechu & Dragon Blood Stains
These penetrating stains change the colour of wood by applying dissolved pigments to the surface. Catechu is thinned with water; Dragon Blood with alcohol. For best results, use raw, unprocessed wood free of metal parts and remove any old coatings beforehand.
Generally possible, but time and cost-intensive as penetrating stains always require a protective topcoat.
Stained surfaces must have a protective topcoat to prevent damage. Catechu stain accepts oils, waxes or paints; Dragon Blood-treated wood requires a clear paint protection.
Application: Wood Stains & Paints
Aqua Wood Stain No. 160 is recommended. It contains no solvents and meets EU children’s toy standards. Stiftung Warentest named it “test winner” (05/2006). Many attractive colours are available.
Discontinued colour formulations are published on our website for DIY reference, including wood stain colours discontinued in 2011–2013 and brown paint tones discontinued in 2015.
It depends on the outdoor temperature — a minimum of 10°C is required. Below this, drying time increases significantly; if frost occurs before the paint has dried, it may peel. Cover freshly painted facades if there is a risk of frost.
Application: Oils & Waxes
Excess material is oil or stain that has not penetrated the wood and remains on the surface. Remove within 15 minutes using a lint-free cloth or paper towel. This critical instruction appears on product labels but represents one of the most common application errors.
Clinker Oil No. 114 is recommended for cement tiles, clinker, stone and terracotta tiles.
Application: Cleaning Products
Universal Floor Cleaner No. 427 is recommended for maintenance. For additional care, periodically apply Wood Floor Cleaning & Care No. 661, which provides light oiling and antistatic effects.
Dish Detergent No. 473 is highly suitable for cleaning glass due to its degreasing properties and strong cleaning power.
Application: Wall Paints & Plasters
Standard-quality Wall Paint No. 321 is our best-selling dispersion paint. Premium-tier Plantodecor Premium No. 524 achieves the highest ratings for coverage, whiteness and washability. Paints 320, 321 and 524 can be tinted with Full-Tone Tinting Colours No. 330. High-grade Silicate Paint No. 303 matches Plantodecor quality and requires no preservatives thanks to its silicate composition.
Chalk Paint No. 326 contains no titanium dioxide and achieves full coverage only when dry. High-Grade Lime Paint No. 344 covers well when wet and is our best-selling lime paint. Mould Prevention Paint No. 327 is a specialist lime paint authorised under EU biocide regulations. Airfresh Wall Paint No. 328 is a photocatalytically active lime paint that absorbs and eliminates unpleasant indoor odours.
System consistency is recommended — lime over lime, dispersion over dispersion. Due to their high alkalinity, lime paints can only be applied over existing dispersion layers to a limited extent and only after prior testing; unwanted interactions may occur.
For strongly or irregularly absorbent surfaces before dispersion or lime paint: Plaster Primer No. 301. For poorly absorbent surfaces before dispersion paint: Grip Coat No. 505. For poorly absorbent surfaces before fibre plaster or lime paint: Grip Coating with Granules No. 506.
Wall Paint No. 321 (white or tinted with Full-Tone Tinting Colours No. 330) or High-Grade Lime Paint No. 344 (white or tinted with Lime Tinting Base No. 350).
